My online dating experience

17 May

I was curious as to what your real opinion is of online dating.

I did meet my girlfriend online, but after a year of painful struggle, meaning hardly any dates despite being educated, employed, and reasonably attractive.

I never really meant to start internet dating, but after a long-term relationship left me single aged 32, I didn't really feel like I had a choice.

My break-up was a bit nightmarish – the girl was due to be the bridesmaid at our friend's all-American, taffeta ballgowns-and-doves-style wedding – you know, the kind of weddings they have at the end of American romcoms – and she failed to show.

It’s great because it exposes you to hundreds of potential partners you’d otherwise have no chance to ever encounter.

But it can be disappointing sometimes, though, because some users are deceiving about who they really are.

That person isn’t serious about finding someone, and you are. I’ve had first dates with men who looked nothing like they did in their profile pictures, and it’s awkward.

They’ll say this and that and sometimes it’s exactly what you want to hear but none of it is based in truth.

Fake, as in: that’s what they looked like ten years ago. Then you have fake profile perpetrators who pose as potential suiters and try to scam money out of you. If your instincts tell you something is fishy, trust your instincts.

Dating in general is such a numbers game that it only makes sense to give online dating a whirl – you will meet people online and as you sift through the legitimate suiters and the time-wasters, there is an opportunity for you to find your true love on an online dating website. If you’re currently chatting with someone online and they more than once cancel, postpone or give an excuse as to why they can’t meet up with you – move on. Some have been pleasant and others have been awful.

When someone says online dating, one of the first sites that comes to mind is Ok Cupid.

It is estimated that there are about 30 million total users, with roughly 1 million unique users logging in every day.
